Home-generated Sharps Waste Disposal: Summary of State Laws and Regulations

During any one year in the United States, an estimated nine million sharps users administer over three billion injections outside of healthcare facilities. “Sharps” include items such as needles, syringes, lancets, auto-injectors, and infusion sets.  There are currently no federal requirements on the disposal of home-generated sharps so the Legislative Analysis and Public Policy Association (LAPPA) undertook a recent analysis to determine the current status of statewide laws and regulations addressing the collection and disposal of home-generated sharps.
